After leaving Cape Girardeau I spent a few days working my way up to Rapid City, SD. Not a lot to see in between thee spots except for rolling plains and farmland. I guess that's what a big part of middle America is. Things start getting interesting again as you approach the Badlands and Black Hills in South Dakota, though. This was the start of the loneliest part of the trip for me because it was going to be a week before I saw anyone I knew. A couple of days into it I realized I had never gone a week without being face to face with a friend or family member, and it definitely felt a little weird. I was feeling a bit alone in the world, but when I would stop for lunch or at my hotel in the evening I ended up having conversations with all kinds of different people. I had my little story to tell, and they had theirs. After a couple of days of this it hit me that, yes I'm on the road alone, but so are a lot of other people, and our paths are crossing here and there so we can share the day's events or what we're doing out here traveling around the USA. I started looking forward to my stops for meals or getting to my next destination to find out who I'd meet and what stories I would hear, and what I would tell. This was an aspect of taking a trip like this that I never anticipated before leaving on it, and it helped me from feeling so alone, and the people and stories helped make the whole thing that much more memorable. Anyway, I got to Rapid City as planned, and took in a few of the attractions the area had to offer, including Mt. Rushmore, The Crazy Horse Memorial, and Deadwood. |
